M22 Electrolyte for Deep Etch and Maximum Contrast

Where M21 is built for uninterrupted running, M22 is the electrolyte for deep etch work and for the darkest mark the process can produce.

When the print calls for depth

Surface contrast is enough for most identification. Some prints are not satisfied by contrast alone — they call for measurable etch depth, either because the mark has to survive handling and cleaning cycles, or because the specification says so. M22 is the fluid for that case.

It also produces the darkest black oxide mark in the range when run on AC.

The trade-off

M22 is not self-cleaning. The felt has to be washed after use, and on a long continuous run that means more interruptions than M21 would give you. That is the whole difference between the two fluids — depth and contrast against uninterrupted running.

Finishing

Follow with N11 Neutralyte. On deep etch in particular, the neutralising step matters more than it does after surface marking.

A note on stencil life

Deep etch works the open areas of a stencil far harder than surface marking. Photo stencil service life under deep etch is measured in tens of marks rather than thousands. Budget for replacement stencils when planning a deep etch series.
